Best Fighting Games

Standard

A few posts back I did a retro piece on one of my favourite games of all time: Street Fighter 2. Ever since then I have adored beat em ups and I try to play every fighting game that is released on the market, be they side scrollers like Final Fight or typical player against player ala Mortal Kombat. So as a follow up to that article, I thought I would give my opinion on what I think are the best fighting games available at the moment on the current and last gen consoles. So here we go…

Soul Calibur 5 (PS3/XBOX 360):
The series is now 6 games in and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Impressive new characters are thrown into the mix (including guest character Ezio from Assassins Creed 2 who is a ton of fun to play) and an improved fighting system makes this instalment a much more offensive game than the ones before. Superb online features and an extensive character creation mode make this the best true 3D fighting game available at the moment. It’s a shame about the single player modes though. Also, don’t forget the real stars of the show, Ivy’s massive breasts!

Street Fighter X Tekken (PS3/XBOX 360/PC/PS Vita):
The impossible has happened, two of the greatest fighting franchises have come together in a memorable gaming experience. Using the classic Capcom two on two tag system, choose from over 15 fighters from each series (including Sony only characters like Pac-Man and Cole from Infamous) to do battle in multi layered arenas with impressive graphics. Fights are brutal and it’s just awesome to see Tekken fighters like Kazuya doing battle with Ryu from Street Fighter. Fans of either series should get this now and kick in some heads. Oh and it’s one of the only games that features a character who is a transsexual, brilliant! If you love Capcoms fighting games the make sure you check out Ultra Street Fighter 4 which is out later this year on all last gen consoles, it also features many characters that first appeared in this title like Rolento, Posion and Hugo.

Super Smash Bros Brawl (Wii):
Smash Bros Brawl is more than worthy of the award of best fighter available on the Wii. Featuring all the most popular characters from various Nintendo franchises, Brawl seeps quality from every pore. Amazing sound, music and bright colourful graphics hide a deep fighting system that helps keep you coming back for more. With tons of features available such as a level creator, trophies and music to collect and many hidden characters, it’s a blast to play and also has support for up to four players.  Keep an eye out for its sequel Super Smash Bros for the Wii U and 3DS out later this year.

Super Smash Bros 3DS Wii U Direct Announcement Mortal Kombat (PS3/XBOX 360/PS Vita):
Every time a new Mortal Kombat was released, gamers seemed to lose more and more interest in the series. They demanded a Mortal Kombat that was as good as the second, and by gosh, here it is. Bringing back all of the classic characters from the original trilogy was an inspired move. Add to this a fantastic story mode, a challenge tower with over 300 formidable tasks to complete, and many collectables. With eye watering fatalities and painful new X-Ray moves, it’s the game Mortal Kombat fans have been waiting years for!
